Nuffnang Featured Blogger for the month of November 2011

Hi there. I’m Ernest Ng from the webcomic series, “Bro, don’t like that la, bro” (dontlikethatbro.blogspot.com) and I’m the Nuffnang featured blogger of the month for November 2011! A galaxy sixed thanks to Nuffnang and everyone who made this happen!

It seems surreal when I received the phone call from Thara of Nuffnang and when she informed me that I will be the featured blogger for the month of November 2011.

I’ve never expected to be blogger of the month much less anything else and I even started picking out suspects in my head at the possibility that someone could most likely be pranking me.

Thara assured me that I was not being punk’d or anything. Only after that, I was ecstatic to the point of almost being high on adrenaline. Mainly because I’ve never been featured in anything before. ‘Jakun’ mode was promptly activated.

Sheer unicorny ecstasy. Image for illustration purposes only.
I do not actually own a unicorn.

“Bro, don’t like that la, bro” comic series is about five guys (a.k.a. bros) living under one roof and their misadventures, awkward behaviours and random encounters in their daily lives. I decided to use “Bro, don’t like that la, bro” for the title as it is a common quote used by one of the bros every time we decide to mess with him and I thought it was a really funny quote and it eventually stuck.

The characters you see in here are actually based on the real life bros of mine and I have known them for the longest time.

Faces covered to protect identities of persons involved

About 95% of the things illustrated in the comics somehow happened in real life at some point in our lives. So you can say it is a comic biography of me and my closest friends. I have successfully single-handedly exposed (almost) all their secrets and embarrassing stories to the Internet populace without any repercussions so far. They haven’t decided to murder me in my sleep yet therefore I’m thankful for that as well.

The whole idea started out about a year ago and it all began due to a challenge by one of the bros and it involved a social networking site and a supposed goat. I will not explain the goat part. Anyway, this was the result.

I was actually so embarrassed by this picture as it looks too childish so I decided to color it. This was the subsequent result.

From then on, I decided to make a comic series based on this drawing. It was sudden and without much thought put into it. Several months down the road, the response from family, friends and even readers I never met in my life before was so good that I decided to put it more serious effort into this series and have kept going till now.

The format of my entries is short, direct and mainly focused on the six framed comic strips and nothing much else. The challenge is always on how to cram an entire story into six frames resulting in some details of the story being left out but thankfully it still maintains the actual core of the story. I honestly do try very hard to make it as funny as possible. At the end of the day, I always find that drawing is easier than writing as it allows me to be more expressive.

I guess it is an unconventional way of blogging thus making the look and feel of reading a blog an entirely different experience for people. Even sometimes I feel I am more like a cartoonist than a blogger because of that. But people still refer me as a comic blogger so I guess that makes me one rather confused person.

My webcomic series have so far opened a lot of doors for me. Nowadays I get more people requesting artworks and designs from me. Currently, I am also running a side project called “Cartoon Wedding Stories” where I draw and cartoonize the stories of couples and newlyweds on how they met and got together and such.

So, interested couples who are interested in your own cartoon story for your wedding, feel free to contact me:)

Through comic blogging, I have met many new awesome people, made friends and even learn new things. Before this, I had no idea that any of this was actually possible. I am actually a giant newbie on the internet especially in the blogosphere. So, if I do somehow offend anyone out there with the weird responses that I give out in the web, just remember that I am a giant newbie. You will feel much better knowing that.

Because of that too, I haven’t had the chance to attend any Nuffnang events (yet), but I sure hope I’ll get the chance to attend more of them in the future!

Feeling better yet?

Am I like my character from the comic? Character wise, almost exactly. Physically, I look nothing like my cartoon character.

Expectation vs reality

Me and my big fake obligatory smile.

I guess that is all about me for now! I wish I can say more but I ran out of brain juice minutes ago as I’m compiling this in 3am in the morning while drawing for my next posting. If you would like to communicate with me and want to know more, do click ‘like’ on the comic’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dontlikethatbro and comment there! I will most definitely respond. Or just simply drop me an email!

But most importantly, do read my comics at dontlikethatbro.blogspot.com and share the hilarity around! If not, I can only say one thing to you:

Bro, don’t like that la bro…
